Cost efficient ways to work with large diameter tubing…
Many operators are looking for economical ways to work with larger tubing … 3.5 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch … even 6 inch and larger! Maybe they have done work using purchased pre-bent components, or farmed out all the larger portions of the job. Maybe they even looked at the price of a large mandrel bender (Wow!). If they survived that cardiac-test, they concluded the need for a cost efficient way to do things themselves.

You might be surprised how much work can be accomplished and how much you can save with an expander making large size expansions to connect your larger OD systems.
So how do you do it? You can buy the large diameter elbows at economical prices from many fine sources, and then use the expander to create the connection to whatever size tubing you are working with. It is just that easy!
Our 1674 dual headed expander comes with 2 standard cylinders, one that can handle up to 6 inch expansions. We also have a cylinder upgrade for our benders that allows you to get this 6″ expander cylinder added to it.
If you really need to “go big”, we now have the 1674V (V for vertical, with the cylinders mounted vertically). This orientation has two benefits. The first, many fabricators like working this way, in essence using gravity to hold the part against the expander head. The second benefit is that you can use larger segment sets, and get wider expansions. We have customers expanding to 12 inches this way!

Stainless steel tubing is still growing in popularity in automotive applications, both in performance exhaust and in street applications. It has many other fabrication uses as well, based on its desirable cosmetic traits.
304 Stainless can be very difficult to bend or form, especially larger diameters, because it is harder, less malleable, and tends to have thinner walls in relation to tubing diameter than other tubing materials. Other materials in which wall thicknesses are thin relative to tube diameter may be similarly difficult to bend and form.
Most new cars come equipped with stainless steel exhausts, so if you’re replacing damaged pipes, you’ll need to use the same material. Not to mention performance exhaust systems, where thinner material can lead to precious weight reduction. Stainless steel has been making its way into other areas like side members as well. Plus, if a Delorian ever runs into the shop, you don’t have much choice.
So, if these materials are best for your applications, there are two options most of you will be familiar with.
If you have experienced the failure of a crushed and worthless part, you may be tempted.
But there is a more economical way to bend. A “Controlled wrinkle” die has gem-shaped recesses that tell the material how to flow to avoid crushing … the material will form into the recesses, forming a distinctive gem pattern and a really nice bend. You may have seen this pattern on some OEM bends. It works amazingly well, and it doesn’t crush your part!
This cool looking and well-formed bend can work very well for many applications. Just to name a few … trucks, street rods, fence gates and other structures. So keep this in mind … simply making your own controlled wrinkle die bends on an inexpensive compression bender is a very economical way to form tough, thin walled tubing.

How do you bend a square or rectangular piece of tubing? Using the right dies is the key to bending steel like a superhero. At Huth, we've designed and built specialized dies that allow our bending machines to easily and neatly bend square and rectangular tubing up to 3-inch diameters.
You can get many sizes right away—we carry stock tooling for ¾” through 3” square tube work, as well as some rectangular sizes. For rectangular tubing, our tooling can bend along the longer dimension or the “easy way” as well as oppositely, a.k.a. “the hard way.”

BENDING SQUARE AND RECTANGULAR TUBING
Many structural fabricators have discovered the power of a compression pipe bender for working with square and rectangular tubing while building structures and frames. We have many regular customers who use benders, often customized for these specific applications, in their manufacturing facilities.
The key to making it work is that we have designed and built special dies that allow our bending machines to bend square and rectangular tubing up to 3 inch diameters easily and neatly. We carry stock tooling for ¾” through 3” square tube work, as well as some rectangular sizes (bending it either along the longer dimension… the so-called “easy way” or oppositely, “the hard way”). We even have dies for flat stock. If we do not have your size as a stock item, we can always make it for you as custom!

THE AMAZING PIPE BENDER PAYBACK: Between 2 and 6 months!
When we go to the SEMA show in November, I always look forward to seeing our associate from Argentina, Daniel Litvak. Daniel has been in the exhaust business for decades, and has an amazing way to get shop operators to see the value in owning a bender.
First he asks how many jobs they are either bypassing or farming out to someone with a bender. A very common answer is “2 or 3 per week”. Of course, he asks this in a humorous and charming manner I have no way to replicate, either on paper OR in person.
Then he asks, “What could you charge for that?” (or “what would you pay?” if you outsource it now) Did you know $250 to $350 per job is not uncommon, of course, depending on the job. That’s $250-$350 you may be sending down the road now!
Then he asks … this time he often turns to a shop owner’s wife (who is often the “CFO”)… what is your cost of that job. The usual answer focuses on out-of-pocket cost for material … 10 feet of pipe, a muffler … maybe $50.
So you get $250-$350 on each job, and it costs you maybe $50 to $75 … that means each job pays you back $200-$300 in cash! At 2-3 per week, that is somewhere between $1400 and $3600 per month in profit returned to you!
Usually at this point, our friend Daniel actually lets the CFO take over the math. There are usually smiles all around when the shop owners realize a Huth Ben Pearson Pipe Bender can be “paid back” in (under these assumptions) BETWEEN 2 and 6 months!!!
After that, it is pure profit for every job! And we have 1000’s of machines that are still in operation after 25 years.
