Huth Meets The Demands Of The Ag Industry

Customizable Pipe Benders and End Formers to Meet the Demands of the Agriculture Industry

A pipe bender isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when we think about what drives the agriculture industry. We might think of the giant planters crawling through the fields sowing the seeds of different crops. Some of us in the Midwest can even picture those fields full of green, leafy rows running as far as the eye can see.

Without the use of custom-made pipe benders, tube benders and end expanders, state-of-the-art farm equipment wouldn’t be able to deposit those seeds, and we might still be planting by hand.

Some of the world’s top manufacturers of seeding equipment know the importance of pipe benders and end formers, whether custom made or off the shelf. These companies have employed Huth Ben-Pearson benders and expanders in the production of their industry leading machinery.

Pipe Benders Drive the Industry

While planting crops is a major part of the very large agriculture industry, it’s not the whole picture. From small to large-scale farms there are hundreds of tasks utilizing dozens of specialized tools. Whatever aspect of the industry you’re an expert at, chances are there is a need to bend pipes and tubes or expand or reduce ends.

Our customers have utilized our bending and end forming machines for hundreds of applications, including:

  • Fencing
  • Direct Oral Feeding Systems
  • Stanchions
  • Structure Framing
  • Bale Feeders
  • Saddle Racks
  • Irrigation
  • Trailers and Hauling Equipment

Whatever your purpose for tube and pipe fabrication may be, you want your parts to come out precise and consistent every time.

What sets us apart is not only our full line of standard machines and tooling but that our machines are also fully customizable. We can offer a solution to almost any problem when it comes to tube and pipe fabrication.

Custom End Forming Proves Consistent in New Production

Bio-Vet is a leader in the agriculture industry focusing on the research and manufacturing of direct fed microbial (probiotics) products for livestock. They offer a full line of capsules, boluses, pastes, soluble powders, calf and cattle electrolytes and daily feed additives.

When creating the prototype for a brand new, one of a kind balling gun that would assist farmers in feeding these microbial supplements to livestock, Bio-Vet’s Mechanical Fabrication Engineer, Kelly Shauf, approached us with a problem – he needed to form the stainless steel to fabricate the balling gun.

“I went through a few more prototypes. I was not completely comfortable with the design so I went on line and looked up the Huth tube and end forming machine for capabilities and ideas. With the videos and tooling they displayed it turned my project around. I pretty much immediately knew what I needed.”

Kelly had previous experience with the Huth Ben-Pearson machinery after a friend formed an automobile exhaust for him in his shop with one of our benders. “I was able to watch him make my pipe as he explained to me what the machine could do. I was very impressed.”

Kelly sent us the specs of the part he was trying to produce for the balling gun and we were able to supply Bio-Vet with off the shelf and custom end forming tooling.

“Discussing my plan with the Huth engineer he was able to design and build the tooling I needed in a very short amount of time.”

Many times we are able to design and deliver custom tooling from anywhere between ten weeks to four months. For minor custom work we can even have the tooling delivered in five to seven weeks. In Bio-Vet’s case the specs they supplied us with made it possible for a quick turnaround, and they were up and running in just a few weeks.

“That custom segment you made for me works perfectly. We launched the product’s production, and after about 10 minutes of me dialing in the machine, I got it up and running and my guys are out there right now knocking out parts as we speak.”

Helping You Succeed in a Diverse Industry

No job is too big or too small for our bending and forming equipment to help agricultural suppliers succeed. One of our clients in the agriculture industry utilizes our pipe bending equipment to fabricate the handrails that keep farmers safe on their machinery. They put our model 1673 tube expander/reducer to work to expand and swage various tubes in different parts of their assemblies.

Whether you’re in the market for standard pipe benders or end formers or need a custom-built solution for your needs, we can help. Contact us today or give us a call at 800.558.7808.

Get The Broadest Range Of Expansions

Many tube and pipe fabricators work on a broad range of tube/pipe diameters. To make this work easier, we created two different models of dual-headed expanders, the 1674 and 1674V.

Watch the 1674/1674V in action

A 3 ½ inch and a 5 inch cylinder are standard equipment on our popular 1674 unit, allowing you to expand tubes as small as 1 inch up to 6 inches with standard tooling. 25,000 and 49,000 lbs. of expanding force (respectively) gives you plenty of power to handle steel, aluminum, copper… even stainless.

Having two different diameter expander tools set up at the same time can eliminate tool changes, and allow quick transitions between operations. These machines have a small footprint, so they fit easily into a shop or manufacturing cell environment.

The newer 1674V Expander has two expanding cylinders mounted vertically. This orientation has two sets of benefits. One, many fabricators like working this way, in essence using gravity to hold the part against the expander head. The second benefit is that you can use larger segment sets, and get wider expansions. We have made this as a custom machine for the last few years, and we have customers expanding up to 12 inches this way!

In addition, this model comes with a new, larger oil tank. The 4-gallon capacity lets you work harder and longer by running cool throughout your production day.

As with all Huth Expander machines, it is easy to use! It comes with Huth’s Accu-Sizer™ system for quick, precise expanding.

While tooling is sold separately, expander tooling through 6″ is readily available from stock. The 1674V can expand to 12” with appropriate custom tooling. We can create custom tooling for nearly any end forming application, and a broad range of expansions and end form shapes.

Keep in mind we can customize machines and tooling to meet your needs.

We would love to discuss your project! Call us at 800-558-7808!

Returning To Basics Is Valuable… Slip Fits… Simple, Cool, Useful

Often if you are working with tubing or pipe you need to link them together with other tubes or pipes. Besides welding or clamping, knowledge of tube end forming can make this go a lot better.

The most common type of connection between a couple of pipes achieved through end forming would be a relatively simple slip fit, where the end of one pipe is modified to fit inside or outside another. This may be done in conjunction with welding or clamping, but you can easily imagine how robust a connection can be formed in this way.

Reduction Slip fits: If you are fabricating a structural member that is going to be visible or out in the open, you would want one tube to slide inside the other in a way that the outer tube is the same diameter as the rest of the tube, making your slip fit as invisible as possible. This is easy to accomplish, but you need to use a swager box, found on our benders and our 1673 model expander/swager. You clamp the tube, and use the cylinder to drive a reducer die over the end of the tube to make the outside diameter slightly less than the inside diameter of the outer tube.

Expansion slip fits: If you are working with the flow of liquids or gases, you may want the inner surface to be as smooth as possible, so you would be better served expanding the outer tube to fit over the inner tube. It is also likely that you would want the inner tube to be pouring the liquid or gas into the expanded outer tube to eliminate any leakage.

Expansions can generally be achieved in one of two ways… Most commonly, with segmented expander tooling (possible with all Huth expander, swager or bender models), the tool is inserted into the end of the tube or pipe. An arbor is drawn back to spread the segment fingers, which in turn expands the tube.

The second way, which purists love because you achieve a perfectly round expanded tube, is to expand with a swage die in a swage box… again, clamping the tube in place before driving the swage die into the tube or pipe to achieve the desired expansion.

If you have worked with us in the past, you probably could have written a far better explanation of this. But every so often, returning to basics can be valuable. Please call us at 800-558-7808 to share your end forming ideas.

Clever Ways To Get The Most From Your Bender

Getting the most from your bender…cool tricks and add ons!

There are some really clever ways to save time and money while fabricating tube and pipe, whether it is in end-forming or bending. These simple ways to get the most from your time and equipment will help you jump quickly to the “masters class”… if you are thinking of buying a bender, you can get some of these free with your bender-die package combo during our Huth Bender Bonanza
promotion!

Change tools in seconds with quick disconnects!
End forming pros know that adding quick disconnects to your end forming tools can save hours of work. Quicker while working and quicker to put tooling away, so it also promotes working “lean”. The holder threads into the cylinder shaft of your swaging equipment, and the 10
threaded shoulder studs screw into your end-finishing tools. The non-threaded adapter works with all non-threaded tooling.

Success with Tight and Small Diameter Bends with the V-block pusher
There is a great little device we recommend for tighter bends (1 1/2 inch radius), and we have helped
customers bend tubing as small as 3/8 inch OD, with as tight as 1 1/2 inch radius bends.

The V-block helps change the geometry of the bending system so a tight radius can be achieved. The V-block helps you handle as small as 3/8 inch diameter tubing, making bends with radius as tight as 1 1/2 inches!

Part #795 V-Block Pusher for 1 1/2 inch to 1 3/4 inch, Part #796 V-Block Pusher for 2 inch to 2 1/2 inch

Tough, Close Bends Faster, Easier and Better
Simple, slip-in spacers nearly duplicate the action of the cutout gates by moving the back shoes and the pipe farther from the gates during bending operations. Spacers help you contend with that second close bend with ease and without any die interference. They also help you get deeper bends. You can use these spacers with a half shoe and a full shoe in any tube diameter.

Bending Stainless and Other Tough or Thin-walled Materials: Controlled Wrinkle Dies

Stainless can be very difficult to bend or form, especially larger diameters, because it is harder, less malleable, and tends to have thinner walls in relation to tubing diameter.

But there is a better way. A “Controlled wrinkle” die has gem-shaped recesses that tell the material how to flow to avoid crushing… the material will form into the recesses, forming a distinctive gem pattern (often seen in OE systems) and a really nice bend. We have dies for

1 1/2 inch-3 inch, bend radii 3-5 inch.

Make More Money In End Forming…

How can I make more money with my end forming expander or swager?

OK, so you are fabricating with tube or pipe, maybe even have an established business or part of your business that brings in good income. But you could always do better with more jobs and more applications, right?

Are there some tricks or ways that you could make even more money as a tube or pipe fabricator? Absolutely YES! Here are a few ideas…

Smaller Tube End Forming:

We are getting a lot of calls about working with smaller OD tubing … 1 inch, 1 1/4 inch, even 1 3/8 inch. These are all types of fabrication applications… making heat exchangers, ag and irrigation applications, exhibit structures, even electrical conduit to name a few. We have small size arbors for our expander machines (for both the handheld 1685S and the bench top models) that allow you to work with the smaller expander tooling. For example, one sign fabricator saved $ tens of thousands by cutting his signposts in half, using a reducer to fashion a simple slip fit and cutting his UPS shipping bill dramatically.

Over 3 Inch Systems:

We work with many users on end forming larger size tubing and pipe. These include aerospace applications, HVAC and irrigation. Many of our customers don’t realize we have readily available 3 1/2 inch, 4 inch, 5 inch and even 6 inch expander tools that could help you tap into this huge and growing market.

If you do automotive work, are you working on larger-than-3-inch exhaust systems? A larger size expander making large size expansions to connect large OD systems can be a huge profit generator. So how do you do it? Well, you can buy the large diameter elbows from many fine sources, and then use the expander to create the connection to whatever size tubing you are working with. It is just that easy. Similarly, we have steam fitter customers adapting tube to fit pipe flanges to save a lot of money on pipe costs.

Using The Swage Box For Reductions, Flaring, and Solid Tool Expansions:

Our 1673 expander-swager utilizes the same swage box that is on our benders. Using this is vital for reductions, and other end forming applications where it is necessary to clamp the tube or pipe. Flares and flanges are easy to accomplish in this way. You can achieve a slightly higher level of precision with your expansions by using a solid tool swage die to expand on a clamped pipe or tube. We often help users in fire suppression, plumbing, agriculture and structural frame fabrication with this type of work.

Shapes:

We get a lot of calls for tooling to help with time-tested end forms and connections… ball joint segments, flare segments, header flange port shapes, etc.  These are great ways to provide valuable services in the exhaust world. Placing bead forms in tubes are commonly used for many clamping applications, and have great potential in both automotive and non-automotive. And they are largely easy to accomplish with the right tooling.

We would love to hear your killer profit ideas! Or, if you need a little help, please call us at 800-558-7808!

Building Versatility in Bending and End Forming Tube and Pipe … We help you get it done!

Building Versatility in Bending and End Forming Tube and Pipe … We help you get it done!

Since Ben Pearson and Huth joined forces nearly 10 years ago, many tooling capabilities have been added to the Ben Pearson line to help our customer fabricators expand their application capabilities. In addition to new applications for automotive fabricators, we are making a concerted effort to build functionality for fabricators who are using tube (square and round) to build structures and frames.

Bending Square

Fabricating with square tubing as structural members is more popular every day. We have tooling readily available for ¾ inch to 2 ½ inch square tubing.

Bending Schedule 10 and Schedule 40 Pipe

Dies to bend up to 1 ½ inch nominal size schedule 10 and schedule 40 pipe are also in stock and ready to go.

Bending Stainless Steel

Stainless is tough to bend. At 2 ¼ and 2 ½ inch diameters, a wrinkle control die will help you succeed by guiding the stainless material and preventing unwanted kinks.

Save Money by making your own Rods and Brackets

If you want to fashion your own hangers or brackets, we have created a powered rod bracket bender attachment for Ben Pearson benders that will easily handle round steel up to ½ inch diameter, or ¼ inch thick by 1 inch wide flat.

Expanding i g g e r, and other End Forming options

Need to expand to 4 inch? We have that in stock. Need to expand bigger? We can make those for you, too! We have added lots of additional end forms to stock … ball joints, beads, and many more!

What else do you need?

….. Custom Tools in as little as 4-5 weeks!

So how did the “Father of Modern Archery” help tube fabricators bend and end form better?

What's the Connection Between Pipe Benders and Archery?

Ben Pearson is legendary in the archery world … widely acknowledged as the father of modern archery, inventing ways to produce bows and arrows that helped archers refine their craft for decades. He hunted the biggest polar bears and grizzlies with his world-renown talent and a bow and arrow!

Later, Ben and the Company employed similar ingenuity in equipment design, helping to perfect cotton pickers, boats, and eventually, shop-scale tube and pipe benders.

Example? With Ben Pearson tube and pipe benders, you can get closer to a perfect 180-degree bend with the extended dies: for example, on a 5” radius die. What you won’t get is a pipe that is crimped or collapsed. The reason for this is very simple – Ben Pearson’s unique die construction eliminates the problem of the pipe locking on the die. This extra feature saves you time and money.

Another example … The Ben Pearson model MC-59 offers two end-of-pipe systems as standard equipment. The segment expander is easy to operate close to the end of the pipe. Plus, the unique bull’s eye gauge, with an accurate and complete O.D. and I.D. setting chart, ensures accurate connections and slip fits. The clamp-down swager system operates on a separate cylinder and gives you the flexibility to swage, flare, ball joint, reduce and flange. In fact, you name the job that needs to be done and this machine can do it.

When Ben Pearson teamed up with Huth in 2008, two premier American-made innovators in bending with a similar philosophy of “It’s all about the customer” came together.

The tradition of innovation continued with three new Ben Pearson bender models. The BP-08 and BP-11 benders incorporate many time-honored Huth features with Ben Pearson tooling. Just watch this video to get an idea of how they work:

Then recently, the combined team created the Fabricator’s dream bending machine (model 3012) This unique design allows operators to make 360-degree bends, as the company figured a way to house the main cylinder below the bending plane. Now tube fabricators have more bending capabilities than ever, as they can bend any arc with the versatility and power of a press bender.

Ben Pearson has always been right on target in product design. Let us know how we can help you with your tube fabricating business!   Call 800-558-7808  or contact us now!

Learning From Fabricators At FABTECH 2017

Learning from fabricators at FABTECH

Right after SEMA last November (which kicks off show season for the Huth Ben Pearson marketing team) we attended the FABTECH show in Chicago. We talked to scores of active participants in the tube and pipe fabrication business at our booth in the “Tube and Pipe area” for the 3 days of the show. What we thought might be interesting was both what they were fabricating, and how they thought about doing it. Highlights included:

  • Bending and the modern farm: We had a lot of interest from agriculture companies for a broad array of farm applications … gates, feeders, panels, railings, stanchions, structure frames, etc. They claimed our bending machines are very versatile and handy, and a very useful buy at the types of price points we offer.

  • Building structures with square or round tube: Fabricators whose business was building structures was another key area of conversation at the show. They manufactured and sold carports and greenhouses, signposts, structure frames, outdoor ornamentals, and a lot more. We spoke with them about cost-effective ways to manufacture … bump bending technique for really large radius bends, square bending, square and rectangular bending dies, and more.

  • We showed the new 2650 Fabrication bender, with great feedback. Top of the line power, with a heavy-duty reinforced frame and a super big oil tank that will stand up to multiple-shift usage. And still at a really affordable price. The people mentioned above thought this tube and pipe bender was a great concept.

  • End forming and more end forming: We talked to a lot of people about end forming, and specific end forming applications. Lots of people doing cool swaging work …  Solid tool expansions to get perfect rounds, swaging different materials like copper, brass, aluminum, titanium, stainless, and less common alloys of steel. Our 1673 expanding machine (it reduces and swages, too!) was very popular, as were our line-up of tube expanders.

  • Lots of automotive guys come to FABTECH as well! We spoke with frame builders (not only automotive, but go cart frames, too!), guys who work with automotive exhaust tubing, builders and fabricators, looking for ideas on how to be even more successful.

What We Learned at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas

What we learned at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas…

If you haven’t been to the SEMA automotive aftermarket show in Las Vegas in the last few years, you are missing something! Screaming 1000+ horse engines, the slickest paint jobs in the universe, and 160,000 passionate automotive market participants … leather, cool hairdos and tattoos abound.

In addition to all these trappings, there is an amazing amount of car knowledge as well. Some interesting conversation areas we had out at the show included these:

  • Horsepower: Everyone is looking for an edge over their competition. We had a ton of interest in our seamless collectors for header systems. No seams internally means less friction to the flow of exhaust gases, which can mean more power… and less chance for leakage.
  • Diesel: People looking for ways to make working with pre-bent fittings a bit easier in the diesel market was HOT!  Many were surprised that they could easily expand 4″ – 12″ plus fittings/tubes for easy to manage slip fits when building those systems. And we also previewed a couple items we are working on … stay tuned!
  • Simple tools: Our little hand rod bender won a runner-up award for the best new tool! How cool is that … sometimes simplicity wins out! It easily bends 3/8 inch hanger rod, as well as metal straps.
  • Tubing: We spoke with a lot of people about tubing specs. Occasionally, people are having a hard time bending 3 inch. We found some suppliers specs do not always guarantee a .080 inch wall thickness or greater. This is (and always has been) important! If you bend 3 inch, please check into this!

Se Habla Español: Lots and lots of international interest. We have selling brochures in Spanish … more to be developed!

If you are working in any of these areas, and need some help, call us! 800-558-7808
